Join Batrabbit Collective, the creators of Rat Academy and Rat Academy 2: Gnaw and Order, for a three-hour intensive in creating, improvising, and performing unique characters. The course will be taught by Joseph McManus (they/he), Katie Yoner (she/her) and Dayna Lea Hoffmann (she/her), who have developed their own method of performance creation rooted elements of Pochinko clown, devised physical theatre, and improv fundamentals. Course instruction will include:

vocal, physical, and perspective methods for character development

Practical exercises used in rehearsals to expand on a character

Improvisational exercises

Character exploration through elements of clown

How to find connection with an audience

The tenets of improv, and using them to explore character

Expanding movement vocabulary through physical theatre exercises

Sections of the course will be curated for areas of interest expressed by participants.
This course is intended for performers, comedians, improvisers, clowns, and physical theatre artists, both starting out and professional. Participants need not prepare anything, but should come ready to move, be weird, and have fun!

Your Instructors
Katie Yoner
Katie Yoner is an actor, producer, and comedian. She is a mainstage improviser and teacher with Rapid Fire Theatre, a judge and workshop coach for the Canada Improv Games, and has taught courses in physical comedy, character, and improv to a variety of age groups and experience levels. Katie performs stand-up across Canada and was recently featured in the Santa Monica Bergamot Comedy Fest and Grindstone Comedy Fest, and runs the weekly Underdog Comedy Show.
Dayna Lea Hoffman
Dayna Lea Hoffmann is a mixed-race multidisciplinary artist from Surrey, BC. In addition to her BFA in Acting, she holds a diploma in Theatre from Douglas College, is a former performer, student and teacher of the Vancouver Circus School, and an alumni of Canada’s National Voice Intensive. Dayna has taught courses based in laban, clown, and physical comedy, and specializes in specificity in movement. Dayna also curates Batrabbit’s monthly comedy lab, a free space for artists to try new comedy pieces and receive facilitated guidance and feedback.
Joseph McManus
Joseph McManus is a graduate of the Manitoulin Clown Conservatory and Artistic Director of Cowtown Brass Band, Calgary’s cow-themed clown brass ensemble. They have taught improv, clown, circus arts, and marching band across Alberta with organizations including Green Fools and the Calgary Stampede Showband. Joseph’s teaching method focuses on finding comfort in failure.
Batrabbit Collective has received national recognition, awards including three sterling awards, and has produced over 70 sold-out performances across Canada. All three instructors have received dedicated mentorship in clown performance from John Turner, Karen Hines, and Mike Kennard, the creators of Mump and Smoot.
